~ WEAKLY MAGAZINES ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Another weekly computer mag has died due to lack of readers and
decent articles, but like the others before it, it won't be missed.
Games-X concentrated, curiously enough on games and the average reader age
was about 10, judging by some of the sections. There was a full page
advert in the last issue promising 'something amazing' from the publishers
in the summer. I can't wait.
~ FIASCO #2 WAITING TO HAPPEN? ~
Atari are having a difficult time, it has to be admitted, selling the
ST up against Amiga at the moment. The new A500+ launched recently had
some compatibility problems but they weren't really major enough to help
Atari much. Now Commodore have just launched the A600, a restyled and
compact Amiga with a built in hard disk.
The price of the basic unit is £499 in the high street stores or £899
with colour monitor and a printer. This will give Atari more headaches.
But, they must have a new machine waiting in the wings surely? The Mega
STE is just a faster ST - important features like improved graphics and
multi-tasking are missing and will cost Atari lost sales because the Amiga
has all this.
It would seem logical that Atari are preparing a super-ST with the
above mentioned features, and based on the past, Atari should be able to
price it below Commodore. Let's just hope that there is no repeat of the
STE fiasco...
~ PUBLIC ADVERTS ~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After revealing last month that ST Format has been scattering subtle
'buy some back issues' messages throughout the mag, I can now tell you of
their latest advertising ploy, which centres around their Public Domain
magazine. In a news article about PD libraries there is a paragraph :
"Mike Goodman of Goodman Enterprises says he is not completely
surprised by the action, considering all the publicity PD gets
these days with magazines dedicated to the subject - including
the best selling PUBLIC DOMAIN from Future Publishing,
publishers of ST FORMAT"
To re-inforce the point there is a full page advert for it later on
in the magazine.

David Ward, Ocean boss speaking on Thames News last month at the
opening of a London trade-only computer show, said games based on Holly-
wood movies were ideal because the process of creating a game was similar
to that of making a film. I bet. It also means that you can churn out
similar, sub-standard games - but still make large profits because of the
big name. He didn't mention this, though.

That's enough Stuff and Nonsense for now. I am afraid there will be more
in the next issue! If you have any stories, computer jokes, misprints,
etc that you would like to share with S & N, send them to me, Raymond.
Address in the STEN team list.
